My phone died yesterday. I have had it for more than three years and it has been a workhorse, but it had been dropped a few too many times and it was dated. The big problem is that I knew I would have to upgrade to something more intelligent and larger - not really what I wanted. But when I tried a scheduled conversation yesterday morning and he could hear me but I couldn't hear him...well I had no more choice. I have upgraded and bought a Motorola Droid Razr. A smartphone. Me! I think I'll enjoy it though, especially because I also got Bluetooth with it so that I don't have to hold the darned thing up to my ear to use it. It got broken in yesterday afternoon in a nice long conversation with Aearwen and yes, I think I like.

will I ever catch up? I'm beginning to doubt it... )

Well, I haven't turned on my computer since Thursday morning, so almost a complete week without checking my Emails, reading posts and story recommendations, or even working on my own fiction. I am dreading opening up my Emails, but today will be a computer day from start to finish. It is my hope that by the end of today my in-boxes will be back under control and I will have wrapped up my O-fic and can get into some serious editing so that I can write some LOTR work again.

So...finally...Sharon arrives this afternoon. Is the house clean? Actually...not bad. I cleaned for a solid twelve hours yesterday - everything from washing my dragon shelving (and dusting and revisiting each of the lovely boys and girls while I dusted them - I love my dragons) to actually sweeping the siding and front door stoop! I took an hour out of cleaning (although there was still laundry doing it's thing in the washer) to have my weekly talk with Aearwen - always a total joy and lifesaver for my sanity, and I ate a quick dinner. Except for that, I cleaned nonstop from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm, ending up with vacuuming throughout the house. The bed is made, the shelves and tables are cleaned and dusted, most of the shredding is done, the kitchen is relatively clean. I'm happy.

It's getting hotter and I expect that I'll be a sweaty mess by the time I finish cleaning house at the end of the day. I'll be a cleaning tornado around my house when I get home from my errands mid-morning. I've cancelled everything else on my schedule and will be sitting down with gloves, chemicals, scrubbers and compounds to try and get the last things clean. Cleaning a house in our humidity and high temps is almost hopeless, but if I don't keep up with it ... well, let me just say that dirt is one of the super-villains of the world, but one that Superman and Batman would have no chance to defeat forever. I want some scientist to invent something that I can spray onto shower grout to forever eliminate mildew. It's SO frustrating. I've tried educating DH about wipe-downs, etc but it just never seems to sink in, leaving me with serious cleaning issues *sigh*.

Sharon says that she will pack T-shirts and capri pants for her Fair visit. I'm going to remind her that our nights will still be cool (thank the Powers for that at least) so a pair of longer pants and a jacket will still be needed for our longer days. Thursday will be the worst day, so we'll just make sure that we eat somewhere with air conditioning which will at least help a bit - LOL.

Today is the first Saturday of the State Fair and I'll be going on my usual date. DH and I take Park and Ride over to the Fairgrounds instead of driving over there and then we wander the Fair, going through some of the buildings (they close at 9:00 pm so we can't spend a lot of time there) and eating our dinner. We usually stay at least until the nightly fireworks display and finally catch the bus back home in time to wake up tomorrow morning and go to Renaissance Festival. It's a busy weekend, but not quite as busy as next weekend will be when Sharon has joined us for our mayhem.

So Lance Armstrong decided to end his constant fight against the doping charges that have been laid against him for most of his professional career. In doing so he is relinquishing his seven victories at Le Tour de France and focusing on the things that he says are most important to him - his family and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I am a bit disappointed with him for stepping back and saying "enough," but I understand it as well. There comes a time when you have to turtle. You have to pull inside your shell and protect yourself because leaving yourself outside will lead to so much bloodletting that you will die by those small arrows. Even arrows shot by faerie bows can harm in the aggregate so allowing protection is not a poor decision. In spite of everything, Lance is my man. He won Le Tour seven times and no-one else has come close. He might be an idiot many times, and maybe not the brightest bulb, but I still think he deserves his well-earned titles.

My DH had left an open phone book on my computer desk telling me to phone (A) or (B) for our water heater. But, after the issues we had with the previous plumber, I wasn't going to just take his word for it and went on to Angie's List to check them out. I found out that firm (A) had a lot of reviews, but very few of them were positive, and firm (B)wasn't even listed. I decided to find someone good instead.

So time is compressing on me. It is August 21st and I'm already stressing about writing deadlines for the 16th of September and the 1st of October, in one case for a story that I haven't even started writing yet. Can everyone say "Ridiculous!" along with me? The next few days will be very busy though, and my writing time will be constricted. The Fair opens on Thursday so a lot of last-minute things need to be accomplished at the small house before then. We will be over there tonight after work to get the lawn cut because we won't be able to cut it again until after the Fair and it will grow shaggy in the intervening time. I have bushes to trim and a general clean-up to do, so I'll be busy tonight. I hope to still get my next chapters posted with the schedule I've set up, but it may be quite late tonight before I get to it.

The State Fair is approaching. Not on small little kitty-cat feet, but on the backs of multiple tires, creaking metal, blowing horses and the backs of hundreds of workers, both temporary and permanent. The grounds are getting their final grooming, the flowers are planted and hung and the ticket booths are in place. The final arts and crafts are being accepted and the varied food stands are being cleaned out, set up, and the food orders from the wholesalers are being firmed up. The Restaurant Depot, Sysco and US Foods will be busy for the next three weeks.

So, in spite of feeling lousy yesterday, I did two loads of laundry, dusted and cleaned, vaccuumed, made Sharon's bed, did a quick grocery shop and picked up a nice bouquet of flowers for her room, picked her up from the airport, and had a great dinner at Red Lobster to start our vacation out right. We'll leave for the Fairgrounds in about 45 minutes here and I'm looking forward to being there again. My throat is still giving me all sorts of problems and I'm still coughing badly, especially when I talk (not so good for catching up on a year's worth of gossip and news) so I'll take my cough drops along with me for sure and carry a drink as much as possible, that will also help. Now....what to eat?????? Happy me!

So, I have been fighting a cold. I would much rather grab a sword and fight it that way, but no can do. Sharon arrives today so I do need to get some more things done.

So, my house is still a mess although DH said he might vaccuum for me (which would be very kind). The kitchen isn't too bad, just a bit messy at the table we use to eat at, mostly consisting of newspapers that I'm still catching up with reading while I eat and small bits of the mail that I need to review and shred.

While so many of my friends were dealing with Hurricane Irene, I, although feeling a bit guilty for our nice weather, was at the State Fair on Saturday night and the Renaissance Fest for Sunday. So, for those of you digging out of tree branches and debris and dealing with water issues who might happen to read my blog, here is life away from the coast. Your lives will return to normal too, I'm sure, and I'm grateful that my friends on the Coast seem to have survived in good shape, for the most part.

I have so many friends and relatives on the East Coast who are being and will be affected by Hurricane Irene. I am thinking about all of you today and through the next few days, I hope that everyone rides this out safely and that nobody is harmed through this storm. Property can be rebuilt or repurchased, lives cannot. Be safe!

I was supposed to spend yesterday cleaning my house. I did...but I also spent more than four hours just writing my next chapter. OK, I was bad. I did errands in the morning that needed to be done and I got my three loads of laundry complete, changed the sheets on the bed and I did some minor touch-up in the bathroom that I wanted to do. But I had really wanted to tackle the den and that didn't happen. I have two cleaning days left until Sharon arrives next week, and it doesn't look good.

DH has a pre-season football game on Saturday night. I was planning to go to the State Fair with him for dinner and roaming. I'll have to see what happens. I pre-purchased the tickets, but there usually isn't a problem re-selling them outside the gates, it's just one more thing that I'll have to do next week unless DH changes his mind.

And my cousin sent photos of her daughter's wedding. I was originally planning to go to the wedding, but reality hit my bank balance and I knew it would be too much money, so I stayed behind and did Irish Faire instead. It was all good. So now her daughter, a 100% California girl, is living in Nebraska. Quite a change. It looks like it was a lovely wedding though.

OK, why all of this excitement about the State Fair? The Minnesota State Fair is the second largest state fair in the nation (superceded by Texas, of course) and it takes place so close to my home that I have corn dogs in my bloodstream. When I first moved up to Minnesota, the small house we moved into was one half block from the main entrance of the Fairgrounds. We lived there for eight years before moving to the suburbs, but we still own the house and I still consider myself a resident of St Paul and a fair-a-holic. There is so much to see and do, food to eat, acts to see, animals to pet, people to watch. I never tire of it.

Renaissance Faire starts today. That means that we're into the final days of summer and beginning days of fall.

It's hard to resist a beautiful sunrise like this...

OK, it's going to be a beautiful weekend, 84F and sunny, so no signs of how cold it will be for closing weekend on October 2nd yet, but the beginning of Fest is always the final bell for the summer. Labor Day will be here soon, along with my BFF Sharon for her annual State Fair and Ren Fest vacation. I'm already all happy, happy about seeing her again.

We always have at least one meal at Red Lobster.
Seafood....yummy!

And it's been such a year! I know she reads my blog and that we'll have so much to tell each other. Tonight I'll take out my Ren clothing, figure out what I want to wear tomorrow, make sure that I have everything I need at hand so that I can sleep as long as possible, and look forward to seven Sundays of the music of madrigals and bagpipes, corsets and long skirts (even though I wear long skirts every day anyway), and drinks of mead.

One of the nicer rides for kids is the
giant hobbyhorse - human powered, of course.

I'm poor this year, so my budget will be strict. And the cast of characters has changed, many contracts were not renewed. But I know I'll have a great time being in the outdoors one day a week, sitting under oak trees dropping thier acorns on all of us, and finding where the best food deals are this year. Call me happy today :-)

I used to have a life.  I remember it.

Text below the cut... )12090 / 100000 words. 12% done!

What remains of open time in my life, at least for the next several weeks, just ended yesterday also.  This coming weekend is Irish Faire, then Renaissance Fair starts for the seven weekends after that, and in between everything else is my BFF Sharon's annual visit (Yippee!!!) and the State Fair.  I won't have a Sunday off until after October 2nd!  By then we'll be through our summer and into the beginnings of our winter, something which in many places usually masquerades as autumn.  Oh well, no rest for the wicked, or the good either.  Play well today, children :-)
