It's been a long Renaissance Festival season. For seven weeks in a row I awakened at 6am every Sunday morning and we were at the gates of the Realm for opening. Usually we didn't stay for the entire day, but we were always there until at least mid-afternoon. Yesterday was final day or "Pink Slip Sunday" as it is known among the players. Many of the acts have already signed contracts for the next several years, but individual cast members are never guaranteed.

The court gathers at the top of the Entry Gate wall to make their
final speeches, watch the performers, and we close by listening
to "William Shakespeare" quote from a Midsummer's Night Dream.

Our King has been part of the court in a variety of capacities for the past 32 years. My DH and I have been attending as a couple since 1979, so for 33 years, and my DH was involved in the founding of the festival in the early 1970's. We are Festies, we have Ren Fest in our blood and I can't imagine not attending. We've already purchased our season tickets for next year.

It's the 27th of September, only a few days left in this transitive month. It starts out with heat and the State Fair - crowds, food on a stick, and my BFF Sharon visiting for another year, and ends up with cooler days, sometimes clouds and rain, and even a snowflake or two. But not this year!

Twig the Fairy has been a staple at Ren Fest for several years. She
plays the pipes instead of speaking and has never been known to speak
a word. Children love her and she's really very charming.

Admittedly, last weekend was cold. At Ren Fest over the weekend we were wrapped up in our cloaks and seeking out patches of sun every time we could. But it warmed into the low 60's and the day itself was beautiful - clear blue skies and just a light breeze.

Autumn is here and starting to be beautiful. This coming Sunday is the final day of Renaissance Faire and we'll be there from open to close. But yesterday was a day where we were pleasantly surprised about how long we decided to stay.

"Tuey" has done his juggling, fire eating and rope walking act at the
Minnesota Renaissance Festival for more than 30 years. He was one
of the only warm people at the Fest grounds yesterday.

We left home in the morning thinking that it would be a short day for us because it was COLD! Really COLD. When we left home in the morning it was 37 F when we left home (2.77 C) and capes were mandatory. I had on two shirts under my corset and wore a set of long pants underneath my skirt which is NOT a comfortable choice, but a necessary one. By the time we left at 4pm though, it was up to 64 F (17.7 C), so it was tolerable. The court was out in their furs, though. Although heat is miserable for them, these cool days are just perfect for their many layers and hoop skirts with bloomers. I was quite amazed by how many of the basic attendees I saw wandering around in summer clothing - short sleeved t-shirts and shorts or sleeveless summer dresses. I guess I'm more practical, or the dragon in me is more cold-blooded. I'm sure my friends would say that cold-blooded is probably closer to the truth.

I have a self-imposed deadline of Wednesday night to have my o-fic complete, edited, and ready to send to the publisher. I'm going a bit crazy because my time to work on this has been minimal. I can't work on it at night, even though it is G-rated, because I get interrupted by DH all the time. He doesn't see why there is a problem with him coming downstairs to tell me what's on TV or comment on something that occurred to him. I'm going crazy because I can't get more than 15 minutes in a row that isn't interrupted so I can't bury myself in my fictional world because I keep getting dredged back into this one. I'll work instead of read at the coffee shop this morning and then continue at the store. I need to get this done, and I need to seriously edit, so Wednesday's studio day will be spent doing that. I really want to at least present this to the publisher. Whether it gets accepted or not ... it's doing something like this - branching out from fanfic where I can only post online to something that may be in print - it's a new frontier for me and I like the challenge. Oh joy, I'm living in a pressure cooker again - LOL.

Tomorrow is our weekly date for Renaissance Festival and it will be their weekend of Chocolate and Romance. It also will be my 33rd wedding anniversary. Yes, 33 years ago (tomorrow), forty pounds lighter and one thousand miles away, I said "I do" and joined my life with the man I considered my best friend. He was one of two men who actually interested me for longer than six months. He kept me guessing, entertained, could carry on conversation on a variety of topics, shared similar interests, and in general seemed like a good bet. Although I have my issues with him on and off, there is a great deal of basic love and respect and I would make the same decision again. At least on most good days - LOL.

My office computers, the ones that operate my inventory, sales reports, and actual sales, are old. I know they are old, the world knows they are old. I've cobbled together newer monitors, and we've burned out several mice, but the sales program that I operate was designed to work with Win 98 and I have to keep computers operating that system available for it. To upgrade to a new computer sales system, from the same developers, would cost $12,000 (not including the actual computers - just the program) and we would have to re-enter each inventory item BY HAND because there is no way to import the items from our older system into the newer one. I have more than 30,000 individual inventory items that would have to be rekeyed. Do you start to understand why I try to baby my old computers along so many years after they should have been in the junkheap?

I need the computer operational, not just a pile of junk. Read on... )

I was already looking forward to my Sunday at the Renaissance Festival - it is Highland Weekend, so I'll have lots of Men in Kilts to look at (pause for happy sigh), I'll be watching the Caber Toss, and I'll happily sit in the Special Events field for hours just watching the games. Guiness, kilts and the caber toss - it just doesn't get much better than that. But....it DID!

So...finally...Sharon arrives this afternoon. Is the house clean? Actually...not bad. I cleaned for a solid twelve hours yesterday - everything from washing my dragon shelving (and dusting and revisiting each of the lovely boys and girls while I dusted them - I love my dragons) to actually sweeping the siding and front door stoop! I took an hour out of cleaning (although there was still laundry doing it's thing in the washer) to have my weekly talk with Aearwen - always a total joy and lifesaver for my sanity, and I ate a quick dinner. Except for that, I cleaned nonstop from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm, ending up with vacuuming throughout the house. The bed is made, the shelves and tables are cleaned and dusted, most of the shredding is done, the kitchen is relatively clean. I'm happy.

The heat we experienced in the beginning of the summer has returned, just in time for Sharon's visit and our marathon sessions at the State Fair and Renaissance Festival. She arrives on Thursday and we will have 90's and upper 80's for every day of her visit. It will be a steam bath and so VERY uncomfortable. It won't change the fact that we will enjoy the experience and seeing each other again, but it truly is miserable when we have weather like this.

Sunday was perfect weather. The temps were in the upper 70's (24 C), the sky was partly cloudy, the mead and beer was flowing, the bagpipes were blowing, and we were exploring. It was the first of our seven Sundays at Renaissance Festival and it could not have started better.

The State Fair is approaching. Not on small little kitty-cat feet, but on the backs of multiple tires, creaking metal, blowing horses and the backs of hundreds of workers, both temporary and permanent. The grounds are getting their final grooming, the flowers are planted and hung and the ticket booths are in place. The final arts and crafts are being accepted and the varied food stands are being cleaned out, set up, and the food orders from the wholesalers are being firmed up. The Restaurant Depot, Sysco and US Foods will be busy for the next three weeks.

It's good when plans come to fruition. I've finished most of the POV revisions on my larger story and, reading through it several times already, I like what I'm writing here. It's clear, it's working for the characters, etc. I still have work to do on this - no doubt. But it's always nice to be happy with a work in progress.

I never really count Autumn as actually here until Ren Faire ends. Ren Faire is my bridge between summer and fall and when it concludes, it is time to move into the colder time of the year.

So, when I arrived at the shop yesterday I was determined to rework my "Out of the Box" story completely and spent the day thinking about it and reading the wonderful link that a friend had sent to me on writing murder mysteries (much of which I already knew, but some of which was a wonderful relevation). Last night I began the actual re-write and, although I'm only three pages in to what had already been nine pages, I'm feeling much better about where the story is going.

So, next weekend will be the final weekend of this year's Renaissance Festival. We've had a great time and usually good weather and we hope that this coming weekend will be beautiful weather for shut-down.

So I picked up DH's new computer yesterday. I had it set up by 8:30 am and started working on getting his programs installed properly. It runs Win 7, so is more up-to-date than any of our other computers.

How can I wake up at 3:30 am and be running late at 5:45 am? Well, I know why I'm late - I had to catch up on a few new chapters in stories that I have been following. So...bad me.

We had a wonderful time at Ren Fest yesterday. Usually there is banter at the front gate before opening, but since it was the 10th anniversary of September 11th, things were more solem. We sang Irish and Scottish funerary songs instead.

So, my house is still a mess although DH said he might vaccuum for me (which would be very kind). The kitchen isn't too bad, just a bit messy at the table we use to eat at, mostly consisting of newspapers that I'm still catching up with reading while I eat and small bits of the mail that I need to review and shred.

While so many of my friends were dealing with Hurricane Irene, I, although feeling a bit guilty for our nice weather, was at the State Fair on Saturday night and the Renaissance Fest for Sunday. So, for those of you digging out of tree branches and debris and dealing with water issues who might happen to read my blog, here is life away from the coast. Your lives will return to normal too, I'm sure, and I'm grateful that my friends on the Coast seem to have survived in good shape, for the most part.
